Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Bullshit.
Words destroyed me.
“I’m sorry. She didn’t make it.”
“Daddy, he can’t breathe!”
“There’s nothing more we can do for your son.”
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Lies.
Those syllables and letters became my executioner. I told myself that, if I didn’t acknowledge the pain and the fear, they would have no power over me. But, as the years passed, the hate and the anger left behind began to control me.
Two words—that was all it took to plunge my life into darkness.
“He’s gone.”
In the end, it was four soft, silky words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Charlotte Mills.”

♦5-STAR REVIEW♦

In the stunning conclusion of this duet, Martinez absolutely enthralled and captivated with The Brightest Sunset. With a hurried sense of urgency, the story picked up right where it ended and it quickly dove into high-level emotions that brought pain and heartbreak and love into one big ball of harried yarn; twisting and turning every character until they were torn inside out and left for broken.

For much of the first half of the book the pace was quick and strongly visceral as the characters we’ve come to know and love went through immense change and upheaval–leaving pages turned quickly and sentences skipped entirely because my eyes couldn’t read fast enough. Martinez dug deep to pull gut-wrenching emotions from her words, which caused conflicting and impossible choices to make. Their pain became my pain and their inability to choose became mine; it gripped and tantalized and left me just as bare as they were. From every single impossible situation came anger and love, and Martinez beautifully showed both the reward and consequence of both paths–showcasing the raw beauty of choosing to love versus the vile jealousy of anger, showcased in each person differently.

The Brightest Sunset spoke to an inspiring, breathtaking proof that love is the strongest bond between any two people regardless of obstacles or battles or time lost. It was a powerful conclusion that hit just as hard as the first part did. Both parts meshed together perfectly and impeccably showed two very different halves of a whole story coming together as one. Martinez flawlessly executed her storytelling craft with this duet and it was absolutely her best work yet.

♦ABOUT THE AUTHOR♦

aly martinez

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
