Black Dagger Legacy Book Two
#1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward returns with an all-new tale of paranormal passion in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.
The Black Dagger Brotherhood continues to train the best of the best to join them in the deadly battle against the Lessening Society. Among the new recruits, Axe proves to be a cunning and vicious fighter—and also a loner isolated because of personal tragedy. When an aristocratic female needs a bodyguard, Axe takes the job, though he’s unprepared for the animal attraction that flares between him and the one he is sworn to protect.
For Elise, who lost her first cousin to a grisly murder, Axe’s dangerous appeal is enticing—and possibly a distraction from her grief. But as they delve deeper into her cousin’s death, and their physical connection grows into so much more, Axe fears that the secrets he keeps and his tortured conscience will tear them apart.
Rhage, the Brother with the biggest heart, knows all about self-punishing, and he wants to help Axe reach his full potential. But when an unexpected arrival threatens Rhage and Mary’s new family, he finds himself back in the trenches again, fighting against a destiny that will destroy all he holds most dear.
As Axe’s past becomes known, and fate seems to be turning against Rhage, both males must reach deep—and pray that love, rather than anger, will be their lantern in the darkness.
Another stunning novel in the Black Dagger World, J.R. Ward wows again with BLOOD VOW. It’s magical the way the two stories of Axe and Rhage are intersected and run parallel with one another; how they’re both on their own paths but influenced by the other. In this novel, Rhage battles for his family and Axe battles for his future. Both are inspirational and filled with immense struggle.
Continuing on with the same recruits from BLOOD KISS, the first novel, this novel focuses on Axe and his journey into moving from a recruit to an actual brother. His story is not without strife, both personal and professional. Not only is he fighting to become something, he’s also fighting the intensely animalistic attraction he feels towards the female he’s guarding in his job. And Elise, as a member of the glymera, is fighting tradition and freedom of her heart. Their connection is palpable and filled with tension. She’s good and he’s bad, the contrast is stark but easily overcome, even if for a moment. They had moments of witty banter that formed a great connection and pushed the romance to another level. But the broodiness and warrior spirit in Axe is what powers this novel forward. His internal struggle became a battle all in itself, and Elise became something crucial to both its growth and demise.
And we get more of one of my favorite Brother’s: Rhage. His family is on the brink of a major change, and the BDB men all come through in his time of need. Mary and Rhage are back in their own little side story that’ll break your heart a little and make you want to reread their story again. I loved that he’s still such a breakout character regardless of what book he’s in, but in this one he felt like he’d really found his stride, as a man and a father.
Ward’s writing, as always, fascinates and transports. The jump between storylines kept things fresh and action-packed. Both stories kept me on the edge of my seat, along with the little build-up we get of future storylines which always makes me extra anxious for more. It may be the Black Dagger Legacy, but it feels like the Black Dagger Brotherhood, and that’s what I love about it. It’s reminscent while still being its own creation. Axe has so many layers and intricate details that he’ll burrow his way into your heart, and Rhage will burrow deeper than he already was. BLOOD VOW is fascinatingly action-filled with a romance that scorches the pages. I’m so very much looking forward to the next novel in the series.
