Oxford Book Two; Standalone
Perfect for fans of Alice Clayton and Emma Chase, Lauren Layne’s Oxford series heats up in this story of forbidden desire as a brooding jock hoping for a comeback falls for a woman who’s strictly off-limits.
A year ago, Jackson Burke was married to the love of his life and playing quarterback for the Texas Redhawks. Now he’s retired, courtesy of the car accident that ruined his career—and single, after a nasty scandal torpedoed his marriage. Just as he’s starting to get used to his new life as a health and fitness columnist for Oxford magazine, his unpredictable ex shows up on his doorstep in Manhattan. Jackson should be thrilled. But he can’t stop thinking about the one person who’s always been there for him, the one girl he could never have: her younger sister.
Mollie Carrington can’t say no to Madison. After all, her older sister practically raised her. So when Madison begs for help in winning her ex-husband back, Mollie’s just glad she got over her own crush on Jackson ages ago—or so she thought. Because as Mollie reconnects with Jackson, she quickly forgets all her reasons to stay loyal to her sister. Tempted by Jackson’s mellow drawl and cowboy good looks, Mollie is sick and tired of coming in second place. But she can’t win if she doesn’t play the game.
Let me preface this review by saying: Oh My Gahhh…*drooly face*
Okay, now I can get back to the review. Mollie and Jackson have a problem. A forbidden sort of problem. See, Jackson Burke is the ex-husband of Mollie’s sister, and let’s just say that their marriage did not end well, for either of them. A tumultuous, media-blitzed divorce has tarnished the reputation of Jackson, helped along by the devastating reality that his accident forever altered his ability to be a quarterback. As any man who has lost his dream, he’s displaced and severely unhappy. Add to that the breakup heard ’round the world and he just wants to escape it all. Enter New York and a columnist position at Oxford, which ultimately brings him back to Mollie. His ex’s little sister who is not so little anymore.
Mollie has been in love with Jackson since she was a teenager. The two of them formed a strong bond of friendship from the beginning that became both of their safety nets for years to come. Until he’s no longer there, and she’s awkwardly forced to side with her sister when the divorce becomes nasty. The same sister who dropped everything to raise Mollie when their mother died growing up which leads to Molly being unbelievably torn on who to trust. When she reunites with Jackson in New York that deep, dark spark is still there, and it’s apparent the attraction is on both sides. The only problem? The elephant in the room: her sister. His ex-wife.
Oh I LOVED this book. It had the perfect amount of angst mixed in with a sexily forbidden romance that was just delicious to devour. Mollie was a kickass heroine that was the perfect mix of nerdy, uninhibited, and brave. She never cowered or played demure; she went after what she wanted with a surety that couldn’t be rivaled. And Jackson needed that surety to settle him out, to make him feel at home again. The sexual tension hidden behind the friendliness was irresistible to read. I ate it up! And what I always love about a Lauren Layne book is the great humor she injects into all of her characters. It lightens up and rounds out each character, and each character has this perfect quirkiness that makes them real, relatable, and giggle-worthy. I can always count on LL to make me fall in love with her men and, most importantly, her women, which is not something I can say that often. If you love sweet mixed with the unbridled passion of a spicy forbidden romance, I WISH YOU WERE MINE is for you!
