Killer Instincts Book Seven (Recommend reading in order)
Out of all the stone-cold mercenaries in Jim Morgan’s black ops organization, Derek “D” Pratt is the most intimidating. He is tight-lipped and covered in tattoos, and even the other guys on his team are afraid to ask him about his past. D’s been off the grid for years, but after his teammate Sullivan is mistakenly captured in his place, D is forced to come out of hiding and face his demons.
When D lands in Mexico, he’s ready to risk everything to save his friend. To complicate matters, Sofia Amaro, a feisty doctor whom D had a one-night stand with months ago, has tracked him down. And in an instant she’s unintentionally caught up in his life-threatening rescue mission.
Now D must extract not one but two people from the most violent world he’s ever encountered. And one of them is carrying his child.
What I love most about the Killer Instinct series is that Elle Kennedy creates badass male and female characters, and she writes this addictive romantic suspense around them. And we’ve been waiting for seven (seven!) books to finally get into D’s head. That wait was not in vain, because MIDNIGHT REVENGE was a fantastic, well-written novel that evoked an array of emotions.
Derek Pratt…where to even start with him. He’s been this brutal, cold solider of a man that has always been completely unreadable. As a reader you can sense he’s had a traumatic past, and turned to a life of violence with military and mercenary work in order to shut out said past. A man with no emotions is generally pretty good with killing who needs to be killed, I’m just sayin’. This cold front has served him well, and no warmth has ever broken past that wall. Until Sofia. The curvy doctor that Morgan has on retainer to mend his men when they’ve been hurt has come to know who each of these men are. One of them fascinates her, and makes that woman mechanism of ‘must fix’ come into full effect. But that soul-deep urge gets her into a deep hole that she isn’t sure she can get out of. And at some point, isn’t sure she even wants to.
I gotta tell ya, I loved this book. I loved D and who he was underneath it all, how bright those layers actually were. The storyline was provoking and heart-racing. The slow way in which Sofia began to peel back who D was, and in those little cracks filled them up with the essence of her was completely satisfying. I couldn’t have imagined a better story for how D found love and acceptance. And the beauty of Ms. Kennedy is that she weaves separate tales within the main one, hinting at the future stories that we’ll eventually see with other characters. Because, damn it Elle, I need Boston and Sully’s book because their tale has been building in each book so beautifully (and tragically) that I’m damn near desperate! If you love romantic suspense, I highly urge you to fall into the Killer Instinct world, and be prepared for a wild ride.
