It was a hot summer day when I met him on the construction site next to my parents’ house. Under the sweat and dirt, Manning Sutter was as handsome as the sun was bright. He was older, darker, experienced. I wore a smiley-face t-shirt and had never even been kissed. Yet we saw something in each other that would link us in ways that couldn’t be broken…no matter how hard we tried.

I loved Manning before I knew the meaning of the word. I was too young, he said. I would wait. Through all the carefully-chosen words hiding what we knew to be true, through his struggle to keep me innocent, and through infinitely-starry nights—I would wait. But I’d learn that life isn’t always fair. That no matter how much you achieve, none of it matters if you suffer the heartbreak that comes with falling for someone you can never have. Because even though I saw Manning first, that didn’t matter. My older sister saw him next.

♦5-STAR REVIEW♦

Something In the Way leaves in its wake an emotionally crippled reader. With a desperate longing between its characters, she’s sixteen and he’s twenty-three, this novel creates explosive sexual tension and a wild emotional connection. It grips the reader from the beginning with the strong voice of our main character and her desire to have the freedom to make her own path. She’s shackled to expectations and rules, pushed down by a future that hasn’t even happened yet, and her reprieve? Is him.

Hawkins explores the connection two people can form without even needing physical touch. When souls connect, under the beauty of the outside body, and how everything spins around it.  Their friendship and desire is forbidden not only because of age, but because of her sister. They are like magnets, opposite ends that bounce off one another, never quite finding a way to get it to stick. Circumstances disallowing it at every turn.

Their story is only just beginning. Something In the Way contains a real beauty to its writing and the path it weaves. Hawkins’ tells it masterfully and soundly, making her characters earn it, yearn for it, and for readers to desire that culmination with everything within them. I fear the reward will be bittersweet, whenever it shall come, but so well deserved. This novel was gripping in every way and I’m absolutely desperate for the next chapter of their story.

♦ABOUT THE AUTHOR♦

Jessica Hawkins grew up between the purple mountains and under the endless sun of Palm Springs, California. She studied international business at Arizona State University and has also lived in Costa Rica and New York City. To her, the most intriguing fiction is forbidden, and that’s what you’ll find in her stories. Currently, she resides wherever her head lands, which is often the unexpected (but warm) keyboard of her trusty MacBook.
