He has one last chance to deserve the girl of his dreams…
Overachiever River Purcell was never supposed to be a struggling single mom, working double shifts just to make ends meet. Nor was she supposed to be abandoned by her high school sweetheart, breaking her heart into a thousand jagged pieces. Now Vaughn De Matteo is back in town, his sights set on her…and River is in danger of drowning a second time.
No one believed Hook’s resident bad boy was good enough for River. Not even Vaughn himself. But he’ll fight like hell to win back the woman he never stopped loving, to keep the daughter he never expected, and convince himself he’s worth their love in the process––even if he has to rely on their fierce and undeniable sexual chemistry.
But even as River’s body arches under his hungered touch, the demons of the past lurk in the shadows. Waiting for Vaughn to repeat his mistakes one last time…
I love the angst and painful heart twinges that coincide with stories about men who leave their girlfriends and don’t know they are pregnant. The journey in which they have to find their way back, while traversing the ever-present sexual tensions, is always incredibly palpable. Tessa Bailey kept me on the edge the entire novel. I could feel (feel!) the painful emotional depth to his realization he left her pregnant all those years ago, and the pain she encapsulates for having being left.
Vaughn and River started an intense relationship as teenagers that transcended either of their realities. The love and passion that existed between them scorched through them, creating a deep love that sealed their forever-love. But things didn’t go as planned, for either of them, forcing their bond to sever. River has raised their daughter on her own, trying desperately to make ends meet with two jobs in a factory-led town. And Vaughn, well, he’s back. After learning his woman (because really, when did she ever stop being his?) was left to raise their child, this Tessa Bailey alpha will tear apart the world with his bare hands if he has to, to get her back. But dang, it’s an upward battle because River is prideful, and strong, and protective of the heart she’s jailed within.
I’ve always applauded Tessa on reaching deep into the caveman-type of man and bringing him into this century. They’re always intensely vulnerable, but fiercely instinctual. They’re feral, wild, and once they get a taste of what they want (or had), they cannot ever get that taste gone. (By the way, Tessa, ever thought of doing PNR? A wereshifter? Because holy shit that kind of man from you, would KILL me. Anyways, I digress…) In THROWN DOWN Vaughn has to work his way back in, and that was insanely sexy and emotional. I could feel the connection these two shared, could feel that tether linking them both physically and mentally, and I just loved this book. It was juicy, erotic, and all-together fantastic in both character and style. Tessa has a way with words, y’all, and I hope she never stops.
