LOST #4; Interconnected standalone
In New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Eden’s latest novel featuring the Last Option Search Team (LOST), one agent’s investigation entices a killer into making her his prey.
PARTNERS . . . FRIENDS . . .
Forensic anthropologist Victoria Palmer has always been better with the dead than the living. Shutting down her emotions, she lets few people in. But then Victoria’s latest investigation takes her and agent Wade Monroe to Savannah, Georgia. Handsome, dangerous, and more than ready to play dirty on any case, Wade weakens Victoria’s aloofness with just one glance.
. . . LOVERS
Wade knows their recent cases have pushed Victoria beyond her limits. But her skills are crucial to finding a college student who went missing five years ago. Victoria is able to determine she was murdered, and that the killer is still on the loose.
And when the vicious murderer targets Victoria, Wade must do everything in his power to protect her . . . because he refuses to let a woman he loves be torn from him . . . again.
I go to Ms. Eden for her paranormal romance and her romantic suspense, and she absolutely shines with the latter in TORN. It never lets up once it starts, going from brilliant character introspection to romance, to mystery, to death, and back. And I’ve literally stopped and started this review too many times to count because I have no words to explain the sheer greatness that is this book (and the series, really). It has such a hidden creepiness in the way that Ms. Eden weaves in the inner evil within all of us to her characters, and in the way that the story carries out. They’re always related in some way, and they always become a pure test for all involved.
Viki and Wade are partners with hidden secrets, but a mutual attraction. When they’re sent together on a case, Viki’s first since her traumatic kidnapping/stabbing, the two break the first rule of work-partnership: don’t mix business and pleasure. Viki has always been better around the dead, studying them and finding the answers that the bodies can’t tell, that she’s found sort of a kindred spirit within them. It’s Wade trying to blast through her walls that she has trouble with, but she cannot deny the attraction either. A no-strings affair begins and ratchets up along with the mysteries surrounding their case. Soon it’s no longer a game watched, but a game played.
TORN has an amazing storyline that will absolutely hook you in. It was incredibly real-feeling the way in which Ms. Eden twisted the story around, weaving it this way and that, leaving you questioning and wondering. And even if you’re able to figure out who the killer is, you won’t be able to predict where the story will go and how it will play out. I was on the edge of my seat, and I stayed up way too late because I had to know the answers. I had to see Viki and Wade fight against luck in finding the sick killer, and for them to find that kindred spirit within one another. TORN knocks it out of the park and is everything I want in a romantic suspense; there isn’t anything I’d change. I really cannot wait for more in this series.
